R.I.P. Paul Newman (1925-2008)

One of the last Hollywood Legends, Paul Newman wasn't content just to be a top-tier movie star (back when being a movie star really meant something) and one of the most desirable human beings on the planet. He wanted to make the world a better place, too, and he put his money where his mouth is. He will be missed.
If you have a minute, read this little obituary over at Slate.com, but be sure to have a tissue at hand.

Only Gay in the Village?

I haven't seen it yet, but I don't really know what to think about Little Britain USA which premieres on HBO tomorrow night. Of course I know what I think about the original Little Britain, which has been rerun ad infinitum on BBC America. I think it is a pretty good, occasionally very funny sketch show which is based squarely in the comedy of the grotesque and relies a bit too heavily on recurring characters and constantly repeated catch phrases. It always makes me laugh, but I never go out of my way to watch it. It is very British, which is part of its charm, and here is where the whole concept of Little Britain USA kind of falls apart for me. The very title is an oxymoron. I can't see how will it work to take these oh-so-British archetypes and drop them into an American milieu. Or is that even what they plan to do? We shall see.

Random Shirtless (and Pantsless) Guy of the Day

Go! Go! Faerie - I'd love to know what that's all about.

Apologies to my readers in the UK who may have expected something (ahem) else. As you may or may not know, "pants" in the USA is synonymous with "trousers", whereas "pants" in the UK are underwear.

Buck Does Clay

If you've spent much time at The YouTubes you probably already know who Michael Buckley is and have watched his knee-slappingly  funny What The Buck Show. If you have managed to miss it, I suggest you remedy that right now.  I know that I said that I didn't have anything to add about Clay Aiken coming out, and I don't, but Michael Buckley does, and as usual he's right on the money.

Shocked! Shocked!

Who ever could have guessed that Clay Aiken of all people is gay?  I'm not going to say anything more about it, but here's a little video that I think says it all.

Visit Jeffrey and Cole at the YouTubes. You will not regret it.

All About Eve (1950)

Addison DeWitt: Dear Margo. You were an unforgettable Peter Pan. You must play it again soon.

"Ned" Declassified

Did anyone besides me just love Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide? No? Just me? Well, anyway, Ned, er, I mean Devon Werkheiser is 17 now and just as cute as a button. And look! He's even sprouted a little Chest hair! How sweet!

Seriously, I would totally tap that.

Auntie Vera's News and Commentary

Here's a recent item from Yahoo News:

Baggy pants ban "unconstitutional," rules US judge
Tue Sep 16, 2:02 PM ET
A Florida judge has deemed unconstitutional a law banning baggy pants that show off the wearer's underwear, local media reported Tuesday.
A 17-year-old spent a night in jail last week after police arrested him for wearing low pants in Riviera Beach, southeast Florida.
The law banning so-called "saggy pants" was approved by city voters in March after supporters of the bill collected nearly 5,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot.
The teen would have received a 150 dollars fine or community service, but he spent the night in jail due to a history of marijuana use, the Palm Beach Post newspaper said.
"Somebody help me," said Palm Beach Circuit Judge Paul Moyle, before giving his decision.
"We're not talking about exposure of buttocks. No! We're talking about someone who has on pants whose underwear are apparently visible to a police officer who then makes an arrest and the basis is he's then held overnight, no bond."
"Your honor, we now have the fashion police," added public defender Carol Bickerstaff, who asked the law be declared "unconstitutional."
The judge agreed with Bickerstaff immediately, reported the Post.
Laws that ban low-slung pants are on the books in several US cities, including Delcambre, Louisiana, where offenders can be fined up to 500 dollars or jailed for up to six months.
Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia are among the larger US cities considering similar measures.

Now here's what I have to say about that:

I am not a particular fan of saggy, baggy jeans. In fact, I find the whole sagging phenomena slightly ridiculous, wholly impractical and aesthetically unpleasing. But so what? What difference does it make what I think of them? If I don't want to wear sagging jeans I am under no obligation to wear them. If I don't like the way they look, tough shit!
Let's be clear: the main reason people get so upset about sagging is not because it is unattractive (which is a matter of opinion) nor is it because they are indecent. What difference does it make how much cloth is covering your ass if your ass is covered? Is the cotton used to make underwear somehow less decent than the cotton used to make jeans? Could the reason sagging upsets people be because it's perceived as being too black?
The people who would pass laws telling you what you can and cannot wear, ironically the very same people who will tell you that they are against big government interfering in their lives, are also the people who would pass laws determining what books you can read, what movies can see, what music you can listen too and who you can sleep with. If these people had their way you would not be reading this and "deviants" like me- and probably you- would not be allowed to walk the streets. Believe it.

Styles That Might Not... Hey! Wait A Minute!

Ascots? Really? Well, if William Moseley and Kevin "Not the Cute One" Jonas have both been spotted in public sporting ascots it must be a trend. Don Knotts may be gone, but his influence lives on.

Another Fierce Blog

I just happened upon this blog, well, actually I followed a link at Valley Dreamin' (thanks j.d.) that lead to this blog, called Fataculture, a film and TV blog written by Nick Plowman, a fiercely intelligent 17 year old from South Africa. When I read these great blogs by these smart, passionate kids it gives me hope for the future of mankind. At Nick's blog I was particularly taken by his entry about Diablo Cody and her haters. At least half of it is a direct quote from her hilarious blog, and well worth reading in it's own right. What Nick (and Diablo) has to say about certain aspects of internet culture really hit the nail on the head. Read it and tell me if you agree.

By the way, the above picture is not of Nick Plowman, nor is it meant to represent him in any way. It's just that I know that unlike Nick, what I have to say is not all that interesting and nobody would read this if I didn't include a picture.

Lucas' Story

Since I've done nothing but blog about Miley Cyrus's boyfriends today, I feel I have to mention Lucas Till, mostly because he is as cute as can be. (Sorry, Nick Jonas. You're cute too, but you have had enough media exposure this year to last a lifetime and I don't feel like adding to it.) 18 year old Lucas plays Hannah's love interest in the upcoming Hannah Montana: The Movie, but he's been in good movies too. He was the kid who got cut in half by a giant saw in the first ten minutes of Walk The Line. Supposedly he was hand picked by La Cyrus herself for his role in the sure-to-be-awful Hannah epic. Say what you will about Miley, she has good taste in guys. But it might be just as well that she has apparently moved on: in his IMDb bio it says that one of his favorite films is 300. I'm just sayin'...

Oh My Stars! Dancing with Cody Linley!

I just mentioned him in the "Miley's boyfriend" post below, but here he is again, delectable, almost 19 year old Cody Linley. Cody has been acting for years, his biggest film role to date being the unfortunately named Mullet Fingers in the mega-flop Hoot. His highest profile role has been as the vapid movie star Jake Ryan on several episodes of Hannah Montana. Cody is one of the stars in the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars, and luckily for him he has been teamed with the very popular Julianne Hough (poor girl got stuck with Adam Carolla last season!). The dancing begins Monday night on ABC. Thanks to ZJan at Young Male Celebs for the top picture. I must be getting cowardly in my old age, but I don't know if I'd have the nerve to walk into a store and purchase a copy of J-14.

Miley Cyrus' Boyfriend (this week)

Three people have sent me pictures of this guy in the past week, so here he is:Miley Cyrus' boyfriend du jour, 20 year old "underwear model" Justin Gaston. He was also a contestant on Nashville Star, which may be why you've never heard of him. Oh yeah, he's hot, but she's just 16 and has already had several reported boyfriends (Nick Jonas, Cody Linley, Lucas Till, that guy who works over at the Tastee-Freez) so why would anyone imagine that this would last for more than five minutes?

Funny... cakes? Yep. Funny Cakes.

Here's something off the beaten path. A funny blog about baked goods gone wrong. Check out Cake Wrecks. It's a gas, baby! So far my favorite is the scary Curious George cake. Scary and tasty!

Bad Beautiful Boy

Il nuova idolo delle teenager, Alex Pettyfer shows off the Autumn/Winter Emporio Armani collection for the Italian magazine MAX. I drool.

I am a bit sad that they decided to airbrush out the mole on his upper left lip. I love that mole.

Blonds Have More Fun?

I can't get enough of Hayato Ichihara, and I partake whenever I get a chance, but I can't really condone the bright yellow blond that he sometimes adopts. It seems as if he has never met a dye pot he doesn't like. I do think the maroon/red looks good on him, though. Makes him look like a character in an anime.
Check out the shirt in the second picture. Can the Japanese really not know how offensive that shirt is to the English speaking world? Or do they know and just don't give a damn?

Random Shirtless Guy(s) of the Day

A little while ago I realized how long it has been since I've posted anything- three days!- and I decided that I need to put up something, anything. Well, not anything, but you get the idea. In the past I have employed the ingenious device of googling "random shirtless guy", only to get a picture of Alex Pettyfer as the number one hit. Just to shake things up I googled "cute shirtless guy", only to get a picture of Alex Pettyfer as my number one hit. Oh well. Instead you'll have to settle for these cuties. Too bad.

Glasses!!!

I have always been a sucker for a guy in glasses, so imagine what went through my mind when I saw these pictures, which were taken earlier on this very day at the National Movie Awards in London. I almost passed out. Seriously.
