Saw Avatar last night. Wanted to love it but at best I thought it was OK. There's this: if you are going to spend $230 million or more to make a movie, wouldn't it have been nice to spend just a little of it on the script? It was pretty, I'll give it that, but CGI humanoids still look as if they were molded out of plastic and the 3D effects in the Army recruitment ad before the movie were more interesting than the ones in the movie. If you are going to charge me three bucks extra and make me wear glasses, it had better be worthwhile, and I'm not sure it was. Sam Worthington, while not exactly my type, has his charms. but I would have liked to have seen more of him and less of the rubberized version of him. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in Clash of the Titans. Judging from some of the breathless commentary I've been reading on line I would say that Avatar is already set to be one of the most overated films of all time, and that just makes me like it less. Avatar is an entertaining movie, with some very good visual effects, but it is in no way a "game changer." It's just more of the same on a bigger budget.
